Discover the Magic of The Nine Streets: The Charming Heart of Amsterdam

Anyone saying Amsterdam thinks of canals, and in the heart of that iconic canal belt—built largely in the 16th and 17th centuries—you’ll find The Nine Streets (De Negen Straatjes). This area is not only a shopper's paradise but feels like an open-air museum due to its stunning historical architecture.

An Atmospheric Winter Setting
In February, this area takes on a truly special character. As the sun sets early (often around 4:30 PM), the romantic streetlights and thousands of lights in the trees along the canals create a magical ambiance. The narrow streets winding between major canals like the Herengracht and Prinsengracht offer an intimate setting perfect for a winter stroll.

Culinary and Romantic Hotspots
Right in the heart of The Nine Streets or just steps away, you will find some of the city's most atmospheric spots:
  • Jansz (Pulitzer Hotel): Located in the heart of the canal belt, this restaurant is highly recommended for a romantic evening. With its pink curtains and refined menu, it is a favorite for both "girly girls" and true foodies.
  • Historical Beauty: The area is famous for its "funny-looking" leaning houses, such as the Sluyswacht, which add to the neighborhood's authentic Dutch culture.
  • Nearby Gems: Just a stone's throw away in the Jordaan, you can visit unique places like Electric Ladyland, the world's first museum for fluorescent art, or the Pianola Museum for a fascinating look at musical history.
The Perfect Photo Location
It is no surprise that The Nine Streets and the surrounding canals are among the most photographed spots in Amsterdam. The many arched bridges over the canals are the ideal place to capture a lasting memory. Special photoshoots for couples are even organized in this district to capture the city's magic.
Events Nearby (February 2026)

Combine your visit to The Nine Streets with other winter highlights happening this month:
  • Amsterdam Chocolate Festival: On February 21 and 22, you can taste more than 35 types of chocolate at the nearby Beurs van Berlage.
  • Winter Festival: The entire month of February is part of the Winter Festival, featuring ice rinks and atmospheric evening canal cruises.
Whether you come to wander past the windows of the trendiest boutiques or to walk together under the canal lights, The Nine Streets prove that Amsterdam truly is a "City of Romance". Opening hours: dependent of boutique, can be found here.

Hit the ice like a Dutchie! Go ice-skating in Amsterdam

Did you know that the Dutch are the true masters of ice-skating? In total till date the Dutch won more than 130 speed-skating medals on all combined Olympic Games, more than any other country. It’s true that the geographical conditions make the Netherlands a suitable country for ice-skating: flat and a lot of water. Next to that, Holland has great indoor and outdoor ice rink facilities. And Amsterdam is no exception. So why not try and hit the ice when spending your time in Amsterdam during the winter months? Probably the most beautiful and pittoresque ice-rink of Amsterdam, and maybe even Europe, is on the Museumplein. Here you can skate right next to the magnificent Rijksmuseum. Unfortunately for the 2025/26 winter season the Museumplein ice-rink is currently closed. But there is a great other option to glide through Amsterdam this winter season. When you want plenty of space for ice-skating, the Jaap Eden baan in Amsterdam Watergraafsmeer is a good place to be and open ...
