Ice Skating Fun in Amsterdam: Gliding through the City until late March

While many city-center rinks pack up in early February, Amsterdam’s ice skating scene is still very much alive. Whether you're a speed demon or looking for a family afternoon out, there are two fantastic locations where you can enjoy the ice well into the coming weeks.

Extraordinary Ice Skating at Amsterdam's Jaap Eden Rink (Until March 22)
The iconic Jaap Eden IJsbaan in Amsterdam-Oost is the heart of the city's skating culture. Centered around a massive 400-meter outdoor track, it offers that crisp, open-air winter feeling that you just can't get indoors.

  • Valentine’s Skating: Book a special 'Private for Two' lesson and hit the ice with your partner!
  • Level Up Your Skills: If you want to master the "Dutch roll," the spring break is the perfect time. They offer intensive 5-day courses for all ages, as well as specialized clinics to help you lean into those corners with confidence.
  • The Full Experience: After your session, head over to CafĂ© JAAP. This cozy, rustic restaurant is a local favorite for a reason—you can grab a hot cocoa by the fireplace or refuel with a hearty athlete’s meal for just €9.
  • Equipment: If you don't own skates, don't worry. You can rent everything from professional "noren" (speed skates) to stable hockey skates at Waterman Sport (at Jaap Eden) starting from roughly €8.
Skating Fun for the Little Ones at Gelderlandplein (Until February 25)
If the outdoor wind is a bit too much for the toddlers, the small indoor ice rink at the Gelderlandplein shopping mall (near the Zuidas) is your best bet. It’s specifically designed for convenience and younger families.

  • Perfect Location: The rink is situated right in the central square, meaning you can combine a bit of shopping with an active break.
  • Ideal for Kids: Being right next to the Kiddieland indoor playground, it’s a paradise for children. The environment is safe, controlled, and sheltered from the February rain or wind.
  • Accessibility: It's a great "stress-free" outing; everything you need—from rental skates to a coffee & lunch corner—is within arm's reach.
Whether you’re chasing a personal record on the 400-meter track or watching your kids take their first shaky steps on the ice, Amsterdam still offers plenty of winter magic to keep you moving!

Hit the ice like a Dutchie! Go ice-skating in Amsterdam

Did you know that the Dutch are the true masters of ice-skating? In total till date the Dutch won more than 130 speed-skating medals on all combined Olympic Games, more than any other country. It’s true that the geographical conditions make the Netherlands a suitable country for ice-skating: flat and a lot of water. Next to that, Holland has great indoor and outdoor ice rink facilities. And Amsterdam is no exception. So why not try and hit the ice when spending your time in Amsterdam during the winter months? Probably the most beautiful and pittoresque ice-rink of Amsterdam, and maybe even Europe, is on the Museumplein. Here you can skate right next to the magnificent Rijksmuseum. Unfortunately for the 2025/26 winter season the Museumplein ice-rink is currently closed. But there is a great other option to glide through Amsterdam this winter season. When you want plenty of space for ice-skating, the Jaap Eden baan in Amsterdam Watergraafsmeer is a good place to be and open ...
